SAGELY WORDS

It may be long before the law of love will be recognized in international affairs. The machinery's of government stand between and hide the hearts of one people from those of another.

Whether humanity will consciously follow the law of love, I do not know. But that need not disturb me. The law will work just as the law of gravitation works, whether we accept it or not.

By blood and origin I am Albanian. My citizenship is Indian. I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the whole world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the heart of Jesus.

SPIRITUAL TEACHING

While engaging in long journeys, two brothers, Rabbi Zusya and Rabbi Elimelekh, often went to the city of Ludmir. They always slept in the house of a poor, devout man.

Years later, when their reputation had spread over the country, they came to Ludmir. They arrived not on foot, as before, but in a carriage.

The wealthiest man in the little town, who had never wanted to have anything to do with the brothers, came to meet them. He pleaded with them to stay in his house. They said, “Nothing has changed in us to make you respect us more than before. What is new is only the horses and carriage. Take them for your guests. We will stay with our old host, as usual.

When I taught meditation classes, we often greeted each other with the Sanskrit word Namaste'. The word can be rendered in English, “The Sacred within me bows in respect to the Sacred in you.”

When we say Namaste', we are saying something important about our equality. We are saying God is equally within us each, all.

This past week I went through psychological testing for a job. The interviewer asked, “What is it that most easily makes you angry.” My response, “When I see someone disrespecting someone else.”

This respect addresses the basic Self of the other person, not his or her history, physical appearance, religion, personality, color, … In the Christian tradition we speak of “True Self.” In the East Indian tradition persons speak of the “Atman” and the “Buddha Nature.”

We are each from the Divine, regardless of what we call That. Much outwardly appears to make us different, most deeply we are the same. God-Within is the Energy, Intelligence, and Life-Creativity we share and links us as brothers and sisters in Nature.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE

Who are the persons that most challenge you to see the Divine-Within? Are there prejudices you need to resolve, so you can better relate to persons with respect for the Sacredness that makes you one? Does this respect oblige you to like everyone? Want to relate with everyone? What are spiritual practices you engage to nurture graciousness toward all persons?
